Its origins can be traced back to ancient traditions of worshipping the moon and celebrating the autumn harvest. The festival gradually developed over many centuries. It became increasingly popular during the Tang Dynasty and flourished as an important traditional festival during the Song Dynasty.

The full moon has long represented completeness and reunion, which is why family gatherings and sharing food are central to the festival.
